THE UNTHANKS are the cover stars of the latest edition of Keighley-based folk magazine Tykes' News.

The renowned folk band feature in a centre-page interview by Tykes’ contributor Ann Chadwick.

Band member Adrian McNally spoke to Ann in advance of his appearance with sisters Rachel and Becky Unthanks at Harrogate International Festival this July.

The interview sits alongside news, views and reviews from the Yorkshire folk scene in the 56-page summer edition of Tykes’ News, compiled by a long-established team of volunteers.

Adrian is a pianist, musical director and record producer for the Unthanks and is married to singer Rachel.

He speaks of a strong Yorkshire influence behind the scenes, even though Rachel and Becky’s accents display the band's roots in the North East.

TV personality Adrian Edmondson said the Unthanks’ music “hits you in your soul rather than your head” while Sherlock actor Martin Freedman said: “They make my heart beat faster."

Tykes’ News also features a report on the Live And Kicking gig organised at Keighley’s Victoria Hall by Elaine to thank fellow folk fans for saving her life.

Elaine was compering Keighley folk club Baccapipes when she suffered a heart attack, and she pledged that after leaving hospital she would raise money for the the Gambian Schools Trust, a charity close to Baccapipes’ heart, and the British Heart Foundation.

Alive And Kicking featured impromptu singing group The She Shanties, Baccapipes regulars, local singer-songwriter Den Miller, and folk artists Chris and Kellie While, Dave Burland, Chris Sherburn and Denny Bartley.

Elsewhere in Tykes’ News, Graham Smout celebrates 50 years of touring by leading guitar player Michael Chapman, a contemporary of Ralph McTell, Bert Jansch and Nick Drake.

Nigel Schofield writes an extensive article about Judy Collins’s classic folk-rock album from 1968, Who Knows Where The Heart Goes.

And Keighley folk musician Alan Rose offers a personal retrospective on renowned folk artist Leon Rosselson.

Reviews include singer-songwriter Roger Davies’ live performance at the Baccapipes, Plumhall in Queensbury, The Fureys in Colne and Bellowhead in Halifax.
