BUDDING stars of the music industry took part in a summer school last week to help them learn how to get into showbusiness.

The new project, called Sound of Bradford, helped teenagers from across the district get involved with the local music scene.

They learned new skills, both onstage and behind the scenes, to equip them for careers in the creative sector.

Factory Street Studios ran the free summer school to offer an introduction to the courses Sound of Bradford will be running in schools next year, giving an insight into the different qualifications and pathways available which lead to jobs in the music industry.

Local musicians have been helping out at the project to give the pupils first-hand experience of what the music industry is like.

Ant Henderson, 19, from Keighley, runs his own radio show and is also a rapper under the stage name Shades.

He has been tutoring the youngsters on how to make professional-looking music videos on a budget and how to produce high-quality home recordings stemming from his experience of recording songs in his bedroom.

He said: “There is no other way for kids to find out about how the music industry works and it’s useful for them going forward with their careers.

“I’ll definitely keep involved when the project goes into schools, hopefully I can visit my old school St Bede’s to pass on what I’ve learnt.”

Mike Green, from the Haworth-based singer-songwriter group NWXN, has also been lending his expertise at the project.

Mr Green said the project had been an “absolutely brilliant learning experience” so far, and praised the young mentors for their work.

He added: “Peer mentoring is fundamental to what we are doing here, it’s not a school, and we are all about getting young people working together and learning.”
