LEGENDARY climber Doug Scott is returning to Colne with a new lecture – and aims to help the people of remote valleys in Nepal.

His latest lecture Everest The Hard Way tells the story of the 1975 expedition when Scott and Dougal Haston completed the first ascent of Everest's massive South West Face.

During that climb Doug became the first Briton to stand on the summit of the highest mountain in the world.

In his lecture Doug not only describes the climb, but how his life led up to this defining moment, and the climbers such as Chris Bonington, Paul Braithwaite, Nick Escourt and Rossendale's Don Whillans, who made the climb possible.

Twenty years ago Scott launched a charity, Community Action Nepal, to give back to the families of Sherpas who helped his climbing.

The charity built schools and medical centres in remote areas, but the huge earthquake that struck Nepal in April 2015 cost many lives and destroyed many of the buildings. Now the charity is working to help rebuild the shattered communities.

Doug said: “The people of West Yorkshire have been great supporters of the charity and I am sure they will find this latest lecture interesting.

“I will also be giving an update on the work that is taking place in Nepal – and every penny raised will go towards that work.”

The lecture is taking place at the Pendle Hippodrome Theatre, Colne, on October 5. Visit phtheatre.co.uk or call 01282 856186 to book tickets.
