PONDEN Hall near Stanbury is well-known for inspiring one of the locations for Wuthering Heights.

Now it features in a new piece of literature which harks back to a notorious incident from the village’s past.

Friller: The Strange Story Of Miss Lily Cove is a play about an Edwardian adventurer who plunged to her death from a balloon in 1906, landing in a field behind Ponden Hall.

The hall will host a one-off performance of the play on October 30 at 6.30pm.

Ponden Now is now a popular bed-and-breakfast run by Julie Akhurst and Steve Brown.

Julie said: “We're very much looking forward to welcoming back Lily to Ponden Hall, 110 years after she originally dropped in.

“Ponden Hall is one of West Yorkshire's most haunted houses, so watch out for spooky visitors this Hallowe'en - and you're promised a good supper into the bargain!”

Sharon Wright, who wrote Friller, first encountered Lily’s almost-forgotten story as a Keighley News cub reporter in the 1990s.

She said: “I’ve always been fascinated by the story of liberated Lily Cove and her larger-than-life manager Captain Frederick Bidmead.

“What really happened in the sky over Ponden on that horrific night more than a century ago? What secrets did brave, tragic Lily take to her Haworth grave?”

Friller will be performed at Ponden Hall on October 30 at 6.30pm.

Following the performance in the atmospheric 17th-century former farmhouse there will be a hearty supper where guests can share their own ghost stories around the fire.
