A KEIGHLEY drama group for people with learning disabilities wants to create a theatre in Keighley’s ‘arts quarter’.

Big Soup Theatre Company hopes use a former mill building yards from the Exchange Arts Centre, Small World youth arts group and the New Variety Club.

The group has applied to Bradford Council for planning permission to convert the office premises, a former call centre, into a theatre.

Big Soup’s director Tracey Venyige said the 60-plus actors were excited at the prospect of a move, but sad to leave their long-time base at Springfield Mill, in Oakworth Road.

She said: “It was hard for us to make the decision. Springfield Mill has been good for us but we’ve outgrown it.

“We have people with wheelchairs and have to make sure they can get in. We’re currently on the third floor. Parking was also an issue – it’s about the health and safety of our service users.”
