TRUMBO is the title of the latest film to be screened at the Picture House cinema by Keighley Film Club.

The Oscar-winning drama, starring Helen Mirren, disturbed many critics when first released in 2015.

It follows the life of Dalton Trumbo, a gifted screenwriter, who was a supporter of the communists in post-war America.

His beliefs encouraged criticism from journalists and others in the film world, fearful for their own livelihoods escalated by the witch hunt of Senator Joseph McCarthy.

Trumbo was put on a blacklist and subpoenaed to appear before the Committee of Unamerican Activities, and he was sentenced to jail.

On release, he battled to rebuild his life by letting others take credit for his film scripts, then President JF Kennedy praised his movie Spartacus.

Trumbo has been praised for its chilling reminder of the past and its paranoid impact on the future.

The film is screened at the Picture House, North Street, on December 18 at 6pm.
