THE MUSICAL director of local choir Opus 44 went out on a high as her singers scored competition success in Wales.

The Bingley choir competed in the at the North Wales Choral Festival in Llandudno, coming third in the Ladies Choir class.

This was the last time Alison Pryce-Jones led the choir before her retirement after 12 years of conducting.

Opus 44 will sing carols at the entrance to Sainsbury’s supermarket in Keighley on Tuesday, December 13 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Proceeds will go to cancer charity Marie Curie.

The new conductor of the long-established choir is Paula Sides.

Opus 44 regularly win competitions both in the Bradford district and further afield.

Earlier this year they won the choir competition at Skipton Music Festival against strong opposition, soon after winning both the Ladies Class and the overall Choir Challenge at the Mrs Sunderland Music Festival in Huddersfield.

Opus 44 rehearse in Bingley, drawing membership from Craven, Keighley and Bingley but also attracting singers from Halifax, Otley, Wakefield and Wycoller.

The choir’s repertoire has ranged from madrigals to musicals, reflecting Alison Pryce-Jones’s ability to find a varied and enjoyable repertoire of songs for upper voices.

During one concert this year, the choir were joined by talented musicians from Kirklees and Calderdale.
