THE LAWRENCE Batley Theatre in Huddersfield has chosen Cinderella for its first professional pantomime.

The first such show in the theatre’s 22-year history, running until December 31, is a new adaptation of Cinderella by critically-acclaimed playwright Andrew Pollard.

In a fairy-tale kingdom, poor Cinderella is a servant to her cruel stepmother and ugly stepsisters. When a handsome prince invites all the maidens of the land to his party, she only has rags to wear.

With the help of her friend Buttons, and a sprinkling of magic from her Fairy Godmother, will she make it to the ball after all?

A spokesman said: “This classic rags to riches story is everything you’d expect from a pantomime - sparkling scenery, live well-known music, and plenty of audience interaction – with two very ugly dames for double the laughs.”

The production’s excellent cast will feature Nisa Cole in the title role of Cinderella.

Nisa is best known for playing Amy Porter in the hit BBC One series Waterloo and most recently as Penelope Betteredge in BBC One’s daytime drama The Moonstone.

Her other credits include appearing in the hit ITV series Scott and Bailey and in the National Theatre’s touring production of War Horse.

Playwright and actor Andrew Pollard regularly writes, directs and appears as the Dame in Greenwich Theatre’s Christmas pantomime.

He said: “The Lawrence Batley Theatre is starting with the most popular panto of all, filled with slapstick, spectacle, romance and fabulous toe-tapping songs with a live band.

“You won't just be watching a show -you'll part of it! “
