A WINTER full of folk is revealed in the latest issue of music magazine Tykes’ News.

The A5 magazine, produced by volunteer folk enthusiasts, features news, reviews and listings from around the Yorkshire region.

It includes a full rundown of performances over the next few months at folk clubs in Keighley, Skipton, Bradford, Leeds, and across the South Pennines.

Highlights at Keighley’s own Baccapipes Folk Club include Gordon Tyrall (Friday January 6), Dave Burland (January 20), Pete Coe (February 3) and Steve Turner (February 24).

Steve, described as a shining example of a British folk artist, can also be seen at Otley Folk Club in Korks Wine Bar on February 15.

Meanwhile over at Skipton Folk Unplugged the Strid Miller Trio – featuring Keighley singer-songwriter Den Miller – will perform on February 6.

Tykes’ News reveals that the club will also host rousing shanties and silly banter from Lime Scurvy on January 9, and the “highly-recommended” Hut People on February 20.

The Grove Inn, in Leeds, has a busy winter including Duncan McFarlane and Anne Brivonese on January 6, Notts Alliance with three-part harmonies on January 20, and John Kirkpatrick on February 10.

The Topic Folk Club, every Thursday at Glydegate in Bradford, will host female close harmony trio Yan Tan Tether on January 12, unassuming local singer-guitarist Stuart Douglas on January 19, long-time troubadour Pete Morton on February 16, and the John Palmer Acoustic Band on February 23.

Tykes’ News also features Nigel Schofield’s interview with leading regional folk band The Durbevilles as they celebrate 10 years of presenting a weekly folk and roots show on BBC Radio Leeds.

Duncan McFarlane writes about Wee Dog Sound, an Otley-based PA and sound team that provides technical support for many regional and national folk events.

Other features include an interview with singer-songwriter Nancy Kerr about her new CD, and a detailed look at Bob Dylan’s classic album The Times They Are A-Changin’

There are reviews of new albums by Blazin’ Fiddles, Gifford Rolfe, Coope Boyes And Simpson, Jim Elden and Louise Jordan.
