BINGLEY Little Theatre is offering an antidote to the Christmas season’s peace, goodwill and harmonious family life.

Arthur Miller’s drama The Price offers a less jolly view of family relationships from Monday to Saturday, January 16 to 21.

In New York in the 1960s, the play focuses on the two Franz brothers, Victor (Jonathan Scott) and Walter (Lee Russell), whose father has recently died.

Estranged for many years, Victor and Walter are obliged to meet in order to agree on how to dispose of the old man’s belongings.

Victor, an intelligent and reflective New York cop on the point of retirement, is disappointed with the life he chose, while Walter, a successful doctor, has little time for Victor’s lack of worldly pragmatism.

An aged Jewish antique dealer, Gregory Solomon (Ian Wilkinson), called in to value their father’s possessions, acts as both a catalyst and a chorus to the siblings’ rivalry and the course their respective lives have taken.

As the drama of the brothers’ relationship is played out, Victor is also forced to confront the flaws in his marriage to Esther (Jacqueline Scott).

Although not the best known of Miller’s plays, The Price covers the American dramatist’s familiar terrain.

A spokesman said: “Miller’s greatness as a playwright lies in his ability to dramatise and illuminate the struggle of ordinary human beings to make sense of their lives, and the often tormented nature of relationships.”
