MANY people assume January is where films go to die.

Not so at Keighley’s cinema thanks to wonderful hits such as La La Land and Trainspotting 2 having launched us well and truly into 2017, along with the smash hit Fifty Shades Darker and the family animations Sing and Lego Batman, which kept us on our toes throughout half term!

Keighley’s cinema is a grand old lady at 104 years young, and a rare survivor in modern Britain. We open seven days a week in the evenings, with afternoon shows at the weekend and during school holidays, closing only for Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

This is a tough workload at 104 but the cinema is kept going by the constant attentions of the cinema-going public and a dedicated staff of just nine part-timers and one full-timer.

Keighley is predominantly a town of working families and it’s no secret our priority at the cinema is the latest in family animations and blockbusters, which you can almost guarantee will arrive on release day.

However, with a building and town of such rich heritage, it would be neglectful to play solely to this market, so we support our main programming with a diverse array of Oscar-worthy dramas and live events.

Upcoming events include Royal Opera Live screenings of Madama Butterfly (March 30 at 7.15pm) and Othello (June 28 at 7.15pm) plus Andre Rieu’s live concert from Maastricht in early July.

Keighley Film Club is a not-for-profit organisation attached to us, bringing truly brilliant films once a month from a wish-list of movies circumstances often prevent us from showing.

All people are welcome to attend film club shows, with Arrival (12a) on March 19 (5.35pm) and The Light Between Oceans (12a) on April 16 (5.35pm).

You can become a member: adults pay £12 per year and get one free ticket for film club then pay the concession rate for all Keighley Cinema content. Concessions pay £8 and get two free tickets for film club.

Monday Matinees play during term time, with the best two of our current films available starting at about 2pm.

We also hold ‘Friendly’ screenings on the last Saturday of each month. These have low volume, the house lights left on half throughout, and an increased tolerance from staff for movement and noise. This makes them the perfect environment for people who might otherwise find a trip to the cinema daunting.

If you want to get in touch, you can message us on facebook/(keighleycinema) or leave an answerphone message on 01535 602561 after the listing. We publish screen allocations in advance on our Facebook page so you know what is on Screen 1 (our screen with level access) or upstairs on Screen 2 before you travel.

My thoughts now turn towards planning March and April, packed to the brim with lots of good of upcoming films like Logan (15), the new Beauty And The Beast, and Boss Baby to name a few!
