BUGLIGHT Theatre has unveiled a bold original drama exploring the human story of radicalisation.

Marching On Embers is a devised piece of theatre with scriptwriting by Chris O’Connor and direction by Ruth Carney.

The play is touring, and will call at the Square Bradford Playhouse on Friday, October 6, and the Lantern in Sheffield on October 7.

Marching On Embers is set against a backdrop of post-Brexit Northern Ireland and follows two generations of one family and the actions of the past that haunt their future.

The play examines what can entice a person into violence in pursuit of their views, in a story about family bonds, loyalty, romanticism and politics.

Marching On Embers follows Florie Connolly and siblings Sean and Sinead as they reunite in the family home.

With a fragile peace hanging over their community, the rifts of the past begin to tear apart the foundations of this prominent Republican family when one of them re-joins the struggle against the age-old enemy of the Irish people.

Why are so many young men seduced by the pull of violence? Why are female voices so often stifled in the midst of struggle?

The play began life as an exploration of the Northern Irish heritage of Buglight Theatre’s co-artistic director Richard Galloway and Irish heritage of Leeds writer Chris O’Connor.

It looks at modern Northern Irish life, setting this original family drama against a fractured post-Brexit political landscape to bring a fresh perspective to issues of global radicalisation and the allure of violence.

The production has been created through a collaborative process of research, devising, improvisation and experimentation, and the company worked with teenagers in Ballymena, Northern Ireland, as part of its development.
