THE AUDIENCE can join in as Keighley Playhouse presents its latest drama The Accused.

The play, written by world-renowned storyteller Jeffrey Archer, is described as a tense courtroom drama with a difference.

Director Geoff Whitley said the audience would decide whether the person in the dock was guilty or not guilty.

He said: “In this finally-tuned and interactive piece of theatre, the public will act as a jury, as if it were the Old Bailey Central Criminal Court.

“At the end of the trial, they are asked to give a verdict based on what they witnessed.

“After their verdict, the play continues, with one of the two endings - depending on how the jury voted. You only find out the truth at the end of the play.”

The Accused is staged at the Playhouse in Devonshire Street from Monday to Saturday, October 9 to 14, at 7.30pm.

The Accused allows the audience to listen to the case on both sides of a murder trial and decide whether Dr Sherwood killed his wife.

Archer follows the arguments of the prosecution and defence teams as they examine each witness to get closer to the truth.

The play is punctuated with scenes between lawyers, giving an idea of the strategies that are being put in place at the trial.

Geoff added: “As the trial continues, an assortment of colourful characters appear in the witness box and some details are very interesting. A nurse who claims to have had an affair with Dr. Sherwood seems to know the truth.

“The Accused is a very complicated and intriguing narrative, filled with trickery that will make you constantly sway the balance of the scales of justice between guilty and not guilty!”
