A THRILL-seeking pensioner delivers a twist on the generation game in the latest production from Keighley Playhouse.

The group stages the comedy You’re Only Young Twice at its Devonshire Street theatre from Monday to Saturday, January 15 to 20, at 7.30pm.

A Playhouse spokesman said the play focused on a common problem for families, one that sees Brooksie generating late nights, late mornings, loud music and gangs of mates in the house.

He said: “Sue and Richard are having all sorts of problems with Brooksie which they can’t seem to control and it’s driving them up the wall.

“Every parent has to deal with this at some stage with their children but it’s not normally the children who are doing the parenting. Brooksie isn’t their teenage son, it’s in fact Sue’s dad.”

Sue and Richard took Brooksie in after the death of his wife. But what they got was a thrill-seeking pensioner with a group of over 60s friends who run riot with him and help him relive his youth.

Tom is set to marry Julia but Rose is more than displeased with the arrangement as she believes Tom is easily and often misled by Brooksie, who is living life to max based on the motto “You’re only as young as you feel”.

The marriage preparations go ahead despite Rose’s objections until the stag night arrives, which not only involves a lot of alcohol causing several indiscretions.

The event throws Brooksie’s whole life up into the air making him startlingly aware of his age and begs the question of what he’s doing with his life.

The spokesman said: “The affectionate undercurrent between Brooksie and Rose is plain to see, opposites definitely attract.

“Nevertheless, Brooksie struggles with his unresolved feelings towards his late wife Grace, who makes one or two appearances supporting him but encouraging him to move on.

“Sporting a talented cast, witty humour and an abundance of the feel-good factor, the play is easy viewing for all audiences.

“Everyone over the age of 60 will identify with this play where laughter abounds, mixed with moments of sheer pathos and will leave the theatre feeling the better for it.”

Sharing the director’s hat is a new duo of Debbie and Mike Ellison, in their first official production directing. They are both eager and excited to show off their skills and vision for the play.

Debbie said: “Having another person to work with, bounce ideas off and having that extra pair of eyes has really helped us create the show we wanted.”
