EXPLODING into Glusburn Institute this weekend will be pupils from the Elizabeth Phillips School of Dance.

Children and young people from the Silsden-based school will take to the stage of the arts and community centre with their annual show.

The title of this year’s show is Dance Explosion and as usual, one half follows the theme of a famous story, and the other a set of dances set to popular songs.

Elizabeth said the first half of the show would be devoted to the story of Pinocchio, the boy made of wood.

She said: “He ends up in a puppet theatre, escapes to Pleasure Island, and almost turns into a donkey, but escapes with help of the mermaids and is turned into a real boy.”

Rachel Smithies plays the part of Pinocchio and the senior students will be playing Geppetto, Honest John the Fox, Gideon the Cat, the Blue Fairy, Jiminy Cricket, Strombella, Lampwick and Stopwatch.

Elizabeth added: “The second half of the show, Days Like These, takes us from early morning to late in the evening with music new and old.”

The Elizabeth Phillips School of Dance is based at the Town Hall in Silsden.

Elizabeth said: “The building has been completely refurbished and our main dance hall has been updated with mirrors and permanent ballet barres. It has been newly decorated.”

The school offers classes in ballet, tap, modern stage, jazz and adult tap.

Pupils can begin at three years old with a simple beginner’s ballet class using music and mime. Tap and modern pupils can start at four or five years.

Elizabeth is a qualified associate member of the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance, and also holds an honours degree in psychology and RSA certificates in Anatomy and Physiology.

She was a professional dancer for six years, and taught for schools in Essex and Hertfordshire, producing choreographing many school productions, pantomimes and minstrel groups.

Elizabeth said: “Many of our pupils have taken part in the Keighley, Sutton and Glusburn pantomimes. We have also given many displays for local organisations, garden parties and carnivals.

“For the past three years our pupils have taken part in the local pantomime performed at the town hall by the Silsden Community Productions.

“We have supported many local children’s charities and fundraising events with donations raised at our school productions.”

Proceeds from the two performances of Dance Explosion will be given to local children’s charities.

* Dance Explosion will be performed on Friday and Saturday March 23 and 24 at 7pm. Call 07732 572286 to book tickets.
