ARTISTS from the Keighley area feature on the Big Screen in Bradford’s Centenary Square throughout May and June. Terry Greene, Ben Snowden and Judy Sale are among the latest six artists to be showcased as part of the ongoing Not Just Hockney project.

The theme for the latest presentation of local artwork is Abstract and Expressionist Art, and the pictures are being screened daily at 12.30pm. The other artists being featured are Kerry Stoker and Ian Middleton from Ilkley, and Peter Robson from Bradford.

As usual the exhibition has been curated by Silsden arts enthusiast Colin Neville, who also runs the Not Just Hockney website.

He said: “The art on display on the Big Screen over the next two months can be labelled, for convenience sake, abstract r expressionist in style.

“For some people, this can be an issue as they wonder what to make of it. But I believe, particularly with abstract art, it’s a mistake to assign any real-world ‘meaning’ to it. This style of art is best experienced. You can respond to the colours, shapes, patterns, and texture of the work in ways you can’t always understand.

“This is the beauty of it for me. I can be attracted to the work as a whole – or not. And the interesting thing is in the ‘why’? Why do I respond to the work in the way I do? Sometimes the closer you look, the more you can feel, or respond to the work, negatively or positively.”

Colin said the first artwork he ever bought was an abstract print, adding: “I was drawn to the blend of colours and shapes then, and still am, 50 years later. I’m still figuring out why!”

Terry Greene is a contemporary painter living and working near Keighley. He is currently exploring the way he interacts with the nature and properties of paint and canvas at any chosen time. He is a member of Contemporary British Painters and his work can be found in private art collections in the UK and abroad.

Judy Sale is a Haworth-based artist who uses a range of art media to paint predominantly abstract work, often influenced by her global travels. She was a founding director of the Centre for Contemporary Art in Cyprus and her artwork can be found in public and private collections and has been widely shown in Britain and overseas, including solo exhibitions in Yorkshire, London, Canada, Italy and Cyprus.

Ben Snowden was born in Keighley and still lives locally. His drawings and paintings are influenced by the human form and landscape and his work explores the ideas and relationships between emotion, the unconscious, and reality.
