AGAINST the Grain is the title of a performance by Garth Hewitt in Haworth on Sunday May 13.

The 6.30pm presentation by the Christian singer-songwriter, on the theme of the Sermon on the Mount, will be at St Michael and All Angels’ Church.

Garth has been writing and singing songs of peace and justice for 40 years, during which time he has visited areas of poverty, conflict, deprivation and disaster across the world.

In Haworth, interwoven between the songs, Garth will be telling the stories of how he came to write them, the journeys that led to them, and the people that inspired them.

A spokesman said: “An evening with Garth Hewitt is not just about the music – great as the songs are!

“His songs, his liturgies, his reflective writing and his campaigning mark him out as a prophet of our times, reminding us of the call of the Christian gospel to stand up for peace, love and justice, not just in our personal lives, but in how we organise our society.

“Garth was one of the founders of the Greenbelt Festival, and is also an Anglican priest, and honorary canon of St George’s Cathedral, Jerusalem.

“He established Amos Trust in 1985 to give voice to the untold stories of the forgotten communities he met during his singing and speaking engagements around the world and to pursue his commitment to justice and peace.

“In the last 30 or so years Amos Trust has worked with groups in Palestine, South Africa and Nicaragua, promoting peace, development, reconciliation and justice. Garth’s songs reflect the spirituality and prayer that underpin Amos.”
