A LAUGH-a-minute comedy is promised by Keighley Playhouse for the last play of another successful season.

Bernard Slade’s play You Say Tomatoes will run from Monday to Saturday, June 11 to 16, at 7.30pm.

It’s a rainy day in Sussex and two American tourists accidentally-on-purpose find themselves stranded after their car “breaks down”.

They find themselves outside the cottage of Giles St James and Fred Craddock, two quintessential English oddballs.

Libby Daniels, a semi-successful film director from New York, is travelling with her friend and assistant Daisy.

Libby hopes to revive her fading career by obtaining the film rights to English writer Giles’s mystery novels.

Unknown to him she has managed to track him down, and assumes her prayers are answered.

Then she discovers the reclusive, misogynistic, eccentric author actually loathes Americans and all things related, just as much as she dislikes the British.

Much to Giles’ dismay, Fred offers hospitality and overnight accommodation while their car is repaired. The girls take him up on the offer.

Romance begins to blossom despite the differences and Libby endeavours to work her charms on the divorced Giles.

Gradually she succeeds and starts to sway the publicity shy writer into her way of thinking.

The plan is strong and on course until Daisy accidentally causes a catastrophic misunderstanding, leading the girls to travel back to the States, empty-handed.

All is not lost though, as Giles and Fred follow them to New York, but will there be any reconciliation?

With the promise of the film rights to his novel and acceptance from Libby’s company, it looks as if the future might be rosy, but will the transatlantic culture clash prove too much for the foursome to handle?

Hannah Williams takes the director’s seat for You Say Tomatoes as her debut at Keighley Playhouse, under the experienced mentorship of Kevin Moore.

A spokesman said: “You Say Tomatoes not only explores the differences between British and American attitudes, manners and cultures, it also dishes out much needed hilarity which we all need in our lives every now and again.”
