SUTTON’S theatre group will next year present the world premiere of a new musical entitled Electric Dreams.

The Green Hut Theatre Company is particularly seeking men to join the cast of the jukebox musical to rehearse for curtain-up in April.

The show features 21 hit songs from the past few decades, and tells of a group of redundant workers who start a band.

The band initially struggles to find success, then lead singer Ashley is offered a solo contract and has to decide whether to betray his friends and pursue his dream.

Electric Dreams, which also follows the band’s family and romantic lives, features songs including Summer of 69, We Are Family, Don’t You Want Me, I Will Survive, Three Steps To Heaven and Tainted Love.

Green Hut needs four men of any age to play the band members and plans to hold auditions early in the New Year.

It would also welcome teenagers and adults wishing to be in the chorus.

The theatre group, formerly Sutton Amateurs, decided to perform an original show after an unsuccessful search for a suitable existing musical.

The Green Hut committee was forced to reject several promising shows, ranging from classics to modern hits, on grounds such as casting, costumes, staging and box office potential.

The group’s 2016 musical The Pajama Game, a hit in the 1950s with Doris Day, had poor ticket sales.

A Green Hut spokesman said: “Every year we spend several months searching for the right musical, but it’s increasingly hard to find one attractive to both our members and audiences.

“Looking back over the past few years we realised that what the performers and punters most enjoyed were shows full of pop songs.”
