Much Ado about Nothing – East Riddlesden Hall

EAST RIDDLESDEN Hall was once again the setting for a performance of one of Shakespeare’s classic comedies.

A stage was set up in the field of the National Trust property for one night only as acclaimed theatre troupe The Lord Chamberlain’s Men brought their 2016 touring production to the venue.

August’s changeable weather was kind to the crowd of hundreds, who brought picnics and beach chairs to enjoy the late summer theatrical treat.

The group is authentic to the theatre troupes that performed in Shakespeare’s time, an all-male cast where actors play multiple parts, including the female roles. There is also just one stage set and minimal props, reflecting the Elizabethan theatre.

Despite hundreds of years of language changes, almost all the jokes still hit their mark, and the gender politics are almost as relevant today as they were when it was written.

The group’s performances are a welcome change to the slick stage shows of today, and beyond the great performances and fun plot one of the best things about this production was seeing cast members slip backstage while dressed as a soldier, only to return a minute or two later dressed as a woman.
