First up is a big thank you to Herbert Holden from Keighley who was Bronte Wheelers secretary and a keen club member just after the war.

After reading the first On Yer Bike article, he got in touch and has kindly donated two road bikes and a mountain bike, as well as some other equipment.

The club evening ten-mile time trials have now come to an end, and concluded with a social gathering in the White Horse at Kildwick, where there was a prize presentation to the male and female riders with the most points from the league, the winners being Jason Bateman and Katherine Church.

As summer turns to autumn, the kids club at Marley will finish and competitive members of Bronte Wheelers – children and adults alike – start thinking of cyclo-cross events.

Yorkshire has a very healthy cyclo-cross scene, which caters for all age groups, from five to 75-plus. These races are normally on Sundays and last about an hour, usually in a local park or recreation ground.

For those who don’t want to compete (just yet) but who fancy having a go, there is Bronte run training and coaching on Wednesday evenings at Marley Sports Grounds from 7pm, and all are welcome – just turn up. We even have one bike and helmet now that we can lend out, but give me a call first on 01535 631373.

You can ride either a dedicated cyclo-cross bike or a mountain bike, and again, different abilities all attend.

The autumn and winter also signifies the onset of the social season, which includes local club dinners, association dinners and fundraising dinners. The Bronte annual dinner is usually in January or February, to accommodate all results from the cyclo-cross and the late sportive rides. It is also a time for planning next year, and with the Tour de France Grand Depart coming to Yorkshire, we are already making links with local groups who are in the process of planning their celebrations and events.

It is also the time to get your bike ready for the winter. Some have a winter bike, while others will put on full mudguards and lights ready for the inclement weather and increasingly dark nights.

It is also when the club rides change a little to a steady pace, so if you are considering joining but not sure of your fitness, now is the time, with either the cyclo-cross training or the steady club rides.
