ONE of Oscar Wilde's most celebrated works will be brought to the stage this month.
An Ideal Husband will be performed in Bingley Little Theatre from May 23 to 28, with all shows starting at 7.30pm.
Though written and first produced 120 years ago, Wilde’s play has a strikingly contemporary resonance with its themes of social elitism, blackmail, corruption and the effects of personal misconduct on political reputations.
Set in late Victorian England, the play has at its centre the attempted blackmailing of Sir Robert Chiltern, a rising politician of seemingly impeccable character.
Confronted with a dark political secret from his past by a glamorous socialite, who demands a political favour in return for not exposing him, Robert faces a crisis in both his "ideal" marriage and his promising career.
The twists and turns of chance that ensue in this classic drama of social manners and personal morality make for an intriguing evening’s theatre. To perform this classic of the modern stage, director Richard Thompson has assembled an experienced troupe of players, many of whose names will be familiar to theatregoers in Bradford, Airedale and Wharfedale.
Tickets are available by calling 01274 567983 or from Bingley Arts Centre between 11am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday.
