A round of brickbats and bouquets as you have your say
Unhealthy and filthy eyesore
As a local inhabitant, tax and ratepayer, I feel the time has come to ask whoever the relevant authority is about their concerns regarding the ongoing eyesore at Flappit Springs.
How much is it going to cost me and the other tax and rate paying fools in the surrounding districts to clean up the man-made, possibly rat infested, obscene piles of rubbish accumulating daily approaching, at, and beyond, on both sides of the main road, at this bikers venue (an activity I fully support by the way) with daily visits to the burger van by wagons, cars, bikers and walkers, the whole site has now become an unwelcome, unhealthy, filthy eyesore and when the wind blows, a hazardous place to drive past.
Okay, the bikers need a playground, no problem, and it's great for wagon, van and car drivers to stop for a bite to eat and a rest, no problem, but do me a favour, don't lay the cost of the inevitable clean up, which by the look of it, could run into thousands, on me and others who have no interest, other than for its amenity value, in this site.
As anyone locally will know, this is one of the main roads into and out of Keighley and the "jewel" in Bradford's crown, Haworth, many tourists and others travel this route, many will see what I see and many may well wish to turn around and use it as the main road out, many others may not care, but either way the fact remains, it's a mess.
Somebody needs to get their act together here, however, there is a way to address this problem, but sadly, it may eat into the quality time of the people responsible for creating this eyesore, but don't even think about laying the burden and the costs of a clean up on me.

Thanks for kind letter
Re Letter of the Week, February 28, 2008. Please could you thank Keith Whitaker for his kind letter regarding Signalman Harry Marsden of the Royal Corps of Signals and his time in occupied Singapore.
Harry had played for Keighley RLFC in the 1930s and was 32 when Singapore fell to the invading Japanese, suffering along with 100,000 other British Troops.
For the next three and a half years, he was a PoW working at first at building roads then on to the railway up to Burma, the famous Bridge over the River Kwai. During his years has a PoW, he, like so many thousands of others, suffered many terrible illnesses, malaria, beri-beri and cholera. He also lost part of his foot with ulcer's.
Alas, in 1967, he became ill and the doctor thought it was something tropical and wanted Harry to go to the tropical disease hospital in Liverpool but it was too late, Harry died on April 9, 1968, aged 61.
The toil's of his time as a PoW, had finally caught up to him. He left behind his wife, Cissie, daughter Irene, granddaughter Margaret and grandsons Stephen and three week old Shaun. Like all of the soldier's and PoWs who was held by the Japanese and was forced to work building roads, railways, bridges and airfields for the Japanese war machine, they did not receive any compensation for their sufferings.
His story can be read at http://www.keighley.plus.com/harrymarsden.htm On behalf of all his family, we would like it known that he (and all the other PoWs of the Japanese), still make us all proud.
Christopher M Kelly,
Grandson of Signalman Harry Marsden.

Goodbye Mr Sid
We attended the service of thanksgiving for the life of Sidney Olsson. The service at St John's, Ingrow, was a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much and made a difference to so many Scouts and Guides living in Ingrow and further a field.
In the days when boys were Scouts and girls were Guides, Sid, or as we call him at Ingrow "Mr Sid", and his wife, Olga, broke down those barriers, we were all both Scouts and Guides together as a family and had the best of both worlds. We travelled far and wide under their guidance and were encouraged to reach our full potential. Even after their retirement they were still very much part of the Ingrow Scout and Guide group.
So it was with sad hearts that we attended the service for Mr Sid, the fact that it was held on the Guide Associations Thinking Day was a fitting tribute. The service remembered a man who willingly volunteered his time to teach the values of both Scouting and Guiding to children and young people in Keighley.
Mr Sid will be sadly missed at Ingrow but thanks to his kindness, enthusiasm and values we still have a group which is continuing the ethos of Scouting and Guiding. We would like to thank his family for their kind donation in lieu of flowers, it will be spent wisely and to the benefit of all, and thank you also goes to all those who donated. Our thoughts and prayers are with Olga and his family.

At best bad management
I was horrified and amazed to read the "Plea for Patience" from Ann Cryer in last week's Keighley News.
I know this Labour Government shows little concern for the people who elected it but I did expect better from our local MP.
The state of staffing in her office which has been allowed to deteriorate, for whatever reason we are being given, illustrates at best bad management and at worst complete disregard for her constituents.
People petition their local MP for help often because they have been unable to find a solution elsewhere with other organisations. To them their problem is often a cause of great concern and even distress. It cannot be right, therefore, to expect people to put their concerns and worries on one side for several weeks until she gets her office in order. I suggest that in future our MP employs a bit more forward thinking and has a plan to cover whatever staffing problems may occur, as this present situation is not good enough for the people of this constituency.

Casey's Corner does exist
Re your news item of February 21, I write to assure your readers that Casey's Corner does in fact exist.
At the time of her tragic death in 2004 Casey Mason was a pupil at the school where she is still remembered by many as a lively and responsive pupil.
Her tragic death moved our school community to re-name the Enchanted Garden, then being planned as a resource to encourage the imaginative education of our pupils.
We now call it Casey's Corner as the commemorative plaque states.
It was opened by the then Mayor of Keighley in the summer of 2006 at a ceremony attended by many pupils, parents and friends of our school. Casey's parents were present as honoured guests.
Casey's Corner and our school may be visited by all who still cherish Casey's memory.
All we ask is that they call in at our school office first.

Making the lame walk
Now that the Keighley Area Committee have agreed, in their wisdom, to remove car parking spaces in Town Hall Square, at present for people with mobility problems, could we please be told who were the people who made this decision. I would like to meet them as they are obviously able to make the lame walk and cure disabilities.
I would ask them what experience they have had of either being wheelchair-bound or of being a wheelchair pusher. It seems unlikely that they have either, for if they had it would have been apparent to them that roadside parking in the new spaces so graciously allowed will cause a disabled passenger to get out of the car into traffic coming from behind them in a road already narrowed by taxi parking on the left-hand side, leaving space only for one line of oncoming cars.
If that person needs to access a Shopmobility buggy, the transfer has to be done in this same restricted and dangerous space, causing a build-up in traffic and putting the safety of both the buggy user and Mr Wright, who supplies the buggies, in peril. Should the disabled person not require a buggy it is probable they will have their own wheelchair in the boot of their car. This means there needs to be sufficient space to unload the wheelchair from the boot, probably erect it before use - all in the middle of the road with traffic coming fast from behind - before the disabled person can be transferred from the car. This, of course, is presuming that the parking spaces are available, not already occupied by able-bodied bank customers.
I have already taken my husband's wheelchair to Victoria Hall to make clear to the management there what the deficiencies are in access to their disabled toilets - we await results, but in the meantime disabled users of the hall had better have cast-iron bladders before entering the main hall. I would be delighted to give the "planners" the same opportunity to experience for themselves the dangers of their latest unsafe decision.
Would it be impertinent to suggest that councillors actually ask for advice from people most affected by the results of their decisions before they make disastrous mistakes like this one?

Flappit Springs isn't the only litter-strewn eyesore in the area. The retail park on Hard Ings Road is filthy - every hedge and corner choked with litter and flytipping. It really is embarrassing.

A good idea Chris K, the only problem with your suggestion however, is the people responsible for creating this eyesore will get off scott free and the criminal element, Anne Cryer etc., will be elsewhere!

Dorothy Clamp, your statements regarding the actions of the Kly MP Cryer are to be expected as the opposition Conservative candidate for kLY, east, but being "horrified and amazed" is not enough, so I would like to offer to you my own observations as to why this so called MP has acted in the way she has, personally I have no interest in this woman, I have no interest in her office, her staff or her pathetic reasons for staying in Westminster, I do, however, care very much for the people of this town, this country and these Islands.
Last week on 5 March 2008, I witnessed in disbelief as 311 political parasites and traitors signed away the majority of Britains sovereignty by join the European superstate, this day will go down in British history as one of the blackest days of our times, this traitorous fascist act by a British government enacted on its people, these so called MPs are traitors one and all, but what of our own MP Cryer, did she vote for joining this superstate, did she cry out in anger against this fascist act, did she call for the rights of the majority of the British people who demanded a referendum, NO, she did nothing, she did not even have the courage to vote against it, she abstained, which, and because of her position as an MP, makes her as guilty as the rest. Look if you will, and you will find on every war memorial, cenotaph or war grave across the land these words "lest we forget", lettered upon them, words dedicated to the thousands of our war dead, who, after two World wars and many other theatres of conflict, gave their lives to protect us all, to secure our future, the future of our children and grandchildren, to secure our borders and our way of life, the signing of this, (quite possibly) illegal treaty, has made a mockery of the sacrifices made by our valient war dead.
By signing away the majority of the sovereign rights of this country without any conflict, any argument any referendum, these MPs have done what no invading force could ever do, they have done what Hitler could never do, they have lied again to us all, they have failed in their duty to the British people, and our own MP has failed in her duty to the people she was elected to represent, and that I believe is why this MP Cryer has absconded for the time being, she cant face us.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, and to all the people of Keighley, I have some fantastic news for you all, statisics now show that the street prices of class A drugs have halved since New Labour came to power, dropping almost every year since 1997, these newly released statistics show that herion cost as little as £40.00 a gram in 2007, just over half the price it was 10 years ago, cocaine is £45.00 a gram, down from £71.00, the other absolutely great, fantastic news is that the detection and seizures of class A drugs is expected to be down again for the fifth year running, I know that you will all be exstatic about this great news so I wont keep you long, the New Labour Govt, works extremely hard to keep down the prices of essential items like these, and I am sure that you, like me, would like to offer to them our warmest congratulations for their efforts on our behalf, and to thank them again for their efforts in policing our now irrelevant borders, and on behalf of the New Labour Party, I would like to ask you all to donate all of your next weeks wages to help them to carry on their good works.

The last section Peter with Ann Cryer absconding is absolutely correct. She can't face the people of Keighley because she just does not know what to do anymore. The other week I was driving down Devonshire street and I watched her as she scurried down the path and towards the red door of her offices as fast as she possibly could. She was looking around her all the time as if she was expecting something, she looked a worried woman, and so she should with her pathetic statements and arguments of late. I really cannot see how she can come back from her terrible leadership failures, and at a time when she has lost her hardest working employees leaving the baggage. I believe her party faithful in Keighley are finished. Your posting above Peter seals my thoughts. I was told only last week Peter that the Labour Councillors and MP are closely reading the Keighley News postings at regular intervals, seems they are a little frightened of the strong opinion against them?
Labour are indeed the enemy of Keighley these days, only rejection must be our way of telling them.

Here was a letter that I submitted to the Keighley news two weeks ago but unfortunately it never got in.
Sir: While last weeks tragic news of the death of Mr Gavin Waterhouse at the hands of a so called happy slapping gang really upset many people in this town, it seems that the root of our unruly youth is somewhat promoted by those we expect to behave in a more professional manner. For those who were unlucky enough to witness last weeks Brit Awards, you will know exactly what I mean. We had well known celebrities who were constantly swearing on stage and the acts that won various categories staggered up to accept their awards in let me say a very unfit state. At the front of the stage there were hundreds of young people who had come to see their idols, people they look up to as so called role models for the future. By watching their idols these young people will have looked on in awe and many will think that swearing and drunken behaviour is a cool thing to do. The night was a disgrace and made the British people look like the slobs they are described as all over Europe. We need serious change in this Country if we are to promote a better image amongst our youth; discipline has to top the agenda. I believe a good start would be for our media to reject programmes that currently allow these anti-social rants, and then our press should do their damndest to push those who are supposed to be role models, who behave like thugs well and truly out of harms way. Like the Editor of this newspaper said last week “let us for once learn the lessons from a tragedy, and eradicate it from our town”

I disagree with Cllr Thorne in his statement that the planning Officers recommendation to refuse consent for plans for a covered horse riding area for disabled children is an "absolute scandal". The words are a gross understatement!
That the officer/officers responsible for this insensitive and asinine disregard for the disabled and children in particular needs the officers concerned to be required to work with the disabled for at least two years before being allowed to make such crass decisions such as this. I am aware that ‘rules are rules’ and that the ‘jobs worth’ mentality is alive and thriving in the Bradford planning departments psyche. Such a mindset is what has destroyed Bradford City as a once proud and proposed Northern capital. Little people with small minds have not only ruined this City but the lives of those still living within its tyrannical stupidity.
We are all conscious of the fact that large developers have rung rings around Bradford planners and have broken so many planning laws that the public has lost faith in the planning system, yet when a responsive and sensitive response is required for the public good the thick skinned, blinded foolishness of the Bradford planning department come back into play. We all need to demonstrate outside the Keighley Town Council Chambers on Thursday morning before nine in the morning that such lack of common sense should not affect the lives of many disabled children/people.
I am Cllr David Samuels: Spring Gardens and Utley Ward. (Which includes Beechcliffe.)

A discussion we had at home this last few weeks.
Put them in PINK boiler suits and make them earn their benefits BUT of course this would contravene their "Human Rights" wouldn't it?
Looking at the Keighley court lists weekly, we must have hundreds of these offenders - in the 30's out of work people were made to do menial work to get money to survive, what changed? - The PC brigade thats what.
Come on let's get back some pride in this beautiful town of ours.

Brontelady,
Pride in this town and this country can only begin when the totalitarian government of New Labour is removed forever from the political arena, but to get rid of Cryer and go independant would do for now.

As I waited outside a well known fashion store on Easter Saturday I saw a young girl in handcuffs being escorted away by two WPCs and another women who was laughing. I went in the store to find my wife and told her what I'd seen. The young pregnant shop assistant told us that, "The shoplifter is fourteen, she'd taken two hundred pounds worth of goods, she wasn't in the slightest bit bothered that she'd been arrested, and when her mother turned up she burst out laughing at her daughter and the police." Later, I saw a well known 'Smack Head' pestering people for money. Pride? OK so the main concern here is Keighley and district because that's where we choose to live. But has anyone watched the footage of Dewsbury lately? Does anyone manage to watch Jeremy Kyle or other programmes like it without an airline sick bag handy? Pride? There are families out there in various states of dysfunction who haven't worked in generations. They make 'Deliverance' look like a documentary. No prizes for guessing who pays for all the Junk food they devour either. It's easy to say that it's the Government's fault, or the parents, or the 'system.' Harsh facts require harsh measures. A sensible government would make National Service a priority, a return to decent disciplined education, a priority, the return of the death penalty for murderers, Class A drug dealers, rapists, and last but not least Child molesters a priority. But we don't have sensible government do we, and until people get off their backsides and bother to vote we aren't going to have one either. Any party with the above in its manifesto would give a voice to decent hardworking Britons. But with corruption, nepotism, and sleaze in every party out there, things do not bode well.
