College ready for fresh start
Park Lane College Keighley is fighting back in the wake of its damning inspection report.
The "Believe In..." publicity campaign was officially launched last week on the steps of the former Keighley College building.
Staff and students stood together to kick-off what the college terms a "new period of change and progress".
Believe In will be publicised through bus shelter adverts, posters, badges, T-shirts and story booklets.
The launch came less than a fortnight after Ofsted inspectors branded most areas of the college as inadequate.
College principal Maxine Room said staff were aware of problems and were working to resolve them.
Ms Room said: "We feel it is the beginning of a new era for the college.
"The sentiment behind the campaign is about believing the merger will benefit the community of Keighley, and showing support of the staff and students during this time of change.
"We expect to have to undertake a great deal of hard work over the next few years.
"We have been overwhelmed by the fantastic level of staff and student support since the start of the Believe In campaign and have had to print more than 250 extra T-shirts for colleagues to wear."
The Government watchdogs blasted the college's leadership, standards of achievement and effectiveness of provision.
The college's capacity to improve was classed as "satisfactory", despite the arrival of a new management team last autumn.
A long-term strategy to improve the college, already in operation, has led to the new Believe In campaign.
Ms Room said the time was right because Bradford Council had recently approved plans for the college's new Dalton Lane campus.
And the Keighley and Leeds campuses of Park Lane College were starting to gel as one organisation, five months after their merger.
Ms Room said it was essential staff, students and the local community got behind the college during its time of transition. She added: "It is my hope that the community of Keighley will remain devoted to the college, and support us as we move into a new era of improved standards, provision and estates."

I believe the people of Keighley know full well that they have a college in the town, that they do not need adverts in bus shelters, posters, t-shirts or stories of what this college intends to do, they only need one thing, and that is confidence in the college staff to produce the goods, results in the field of education, something the ofsted report has severely criticised, a report not conducive to the present regime. I take issue with the statement about hard work over the next few years, should that not read, constant hard work over the lifetime of the college which anyone can support, or do we look forward to another damning report in the future,

Have you been in the college after it is has been took over? Or are you just one of those people who like to moan about things?
Well I have and I am one of the students. I started when it was still Keighley College and I returned to Park Lane College, Keighley.
Yeah I know there is some problems when it was Keighley, but I can state that Park Lane are working hard to make sure that they are sorted out.
As to them not `producing the goods', I have seen first hand on how much the staff try and enable students to achieve their full potiental - but if the motivation of the students are not there then what chance do the staff have.
Within in the subject I am currently studying there is two students with confirmed University places; which I am one of them, for next year and there are another 4 students awaiting to find out if they progress to university.

Have you been in the college after it is has been took over? Or are you just one of those people who like to moan about things?
Well I have and I am one of the students. I started when it was still Keighley College and I returned to Park Lane College, Keighley.
Yeah I know there is some problems when it was Keighley, but I can state that Park Lane are working hard to make sure that they are sorted out.
As to them not `producing the goods', I have seen first hand on how much the staff try and enable students to achieve their full potiental - but if the motivation of the students are not there then what chance do the staff have.
Within in the subject I am currently studying there is two students with confirmed University places; which I am one of them, for next year and there are another 4 students awaiting to find out if they progress to university.

I find it commendable that as a student, you can stand up in defence of your college, and the staff it employs, but you have no right at all to oppose criticism of this facility, and its staff, when the one thing we have is the recent damning ofsted report, by which to judge your perfomance. By your own hand, you have made a statement that contradicts itself when you state, "if the motivation of the students are not there then what chance do the teachers have", (your words not mine), surely, one of the fundamental methods required by a good teacher to teach is their ability to motivate a student, "producing the goods".
I want the college to succeede, Iwant to see not four, but twenty four or thirty four students go on to UNI,I want the next ofsted report to be a positive one, what I do not want to see is the abuse of my taxes and rates, money spent on gimmicks like T-shirts, adverts, posters and story books that are not necessary, and do not contribute one iota to the ability of the staff, so its up to you, make us proud or stand the criticism.

The purpose of attending colleges or other educational establishments is to achieve the best qualifications possible to help you in the future. The blame here is not the student, although some do not help themselves, it is those who are paid to teach young pupils to gain the maximum qualifications. These so called teachers and college managers, although not them all, are letting the pupils down. Denial and time wasting on silly ventures only denies the pupils. If those in charge cannot lead by example, then they should be taken out of those positions, it's that simple.
