Council takes over policing of parking
New style parking patrols could be active on the streets of Keighley within three months.
Bradford Council is due to take over the policing of on-street parking across the district on July 21.
The new civil enforcement officers will have a range of powers to combat illegal and obstructive parking.
There will be a new range of offences attracting fines of £50 and £70 depending on their severity.
The aim is to make parking regulations across the country more transparent, simple, consistent and fairer to motorists.
A report on the planned changes has been presented to the council's Keighley Area Committee.
The report stated that lack of parking enforcement had led to wholesale abuse of waiting restrictions across the district. Local police were too busy to carry out full enforcement and traffic wardens were no longer being recruited.
The council suggests the parking regulations will increase road safety and improve traffic flow through Keighley.
They will also ensure a turnover of parking in commercial areas, allowing more people to visit nearby shops. As well as regulations such as double yellow lines, new rules cover issues like bus lanes, double parking and parking across dropped kerbs.
The £70 charge will be for serious contraventions, such as parking on double yellow lines, and the £50 charge for offences like overstaying on pay and display parking.
Over the next few weeks the council has to review all existing waiting restrictions.

Can we look forward to the inconsiderate bozos (usualy taxis ) who still stop outside the Yorkshire bank to enable their fares to nip to the ATM for their nights ale money. And also similar jerks who park less than a car length away from the junction round the corner from the banks, thereby stopping both sides of the 'lane being used simultainously. And, while im at it, stop the indiscriminate and downright inconsiderate/danger
ous parking of folk with orang badges - parking in stupid places 'because they can'!

I also plea to those making the decisions to consider ensuring that enforcers work beyond the 9 to 5 day.
The slowdown that happens each morning and afternoon doesn't need £millions - just pay overtime rates.
Also, create the facility for the public to report specific regular problems so that enforcers can target these areas.
