Ten residents at care home are given two weeks to find new accommodation

Residents at a Keighley retirement home have been told they have less than two weeks to find new accommodation.

Woodville, in Spring Gardens Lane, is due to undergo a programme of refurbishment and much of it will close on May 23.

Bradford Council's Social Services department is currently struggling to secure new homes for ten of Woodville's occupants.

Letters sent on May 7 by the owners of the home to relatives of some of Woodville's 14 residents describe the changes as an "unfortunate situation".

They state: "The home will continue to operate as a three bedded home on the ground floor.

"As you can imagine, staffing levels will be reduced in a small home and this has implications on the level of dependency of each resident.

"In order to ascertain our ability to care for each resident appropriately with a lower staff ratio, we have conducted a full assessment of their individual needs."

The letters gave the family members of those who have to move out "two weeks notice, as per your contract".

One man who contacted the Keighley News said his own relative would have to move, adding he was disgusted that he had not received more notice.

However, retirement home owner Jag Gunputh said the two-week limit was not meant to be a strict deadline.

"Not everyone has to move in two weeks' time," he said.

He said he understood there had been good progress in finding alternative accommodation for the people affected.

However, he could not confirm whether they would all be able to move back to Woodville once the refurbishment was complete.

He said the work, which would include demolition and building work in the residents' lounge and dining areas, should be finished before Christmas.

Mr Gunputh, who has owned the home for more than ten years, said it had not been taking in new long-term residents as part of the preparations for its temporary closure.

A spokesman for Bradford Council adult services said: "We have arranged to meet the home owner to finalise details regarding the relocation of residents.

"We are also already working with residents and their families to find suitable accommodation for everyone involved."
