Couple say ‘I do’ to 1940s wedding plan
Jo and Tony Cox have been taking part in the Haworth 1940s weekends together since they started going out in 2002
Jo and Tony Cox have been taking part in the Haworth 1940s weekends together since they started going out in 2002

A couple whose romance blossomed at a Haworth 1940s weekend will re-enact their wartime-style wedding on Saturday.

Tony Cox will feature in this year's event dressed as an American serviceman, while his wife, Jo, will wear the wedding dress inspired by the Second World War era, which she made herself.

Mr Cox said: "It's not often a bride gets a second chance to wear her wedding dress."

The couple first met at a 1940s-style dance in Hartlepool, Jo's home town, in April 2002. Mr Cox, 46, who lives in Essex and manages a private hire coach firm, was a member of the wartime re-enactment group which organised the dance.

A month later, the pair coincidentally bumped into each other again at the 1940s weekend in Haworth.

Mr Cox said: "That was when we really got to know each other. We spent the entire evening dancing and haven't looked back.

"We've been to every single 1940s weekend in Haworth since then.

"We think it's the best event of its kind. The people are so friendly and the whole village gets involved."

He and Jo - a 42-year-old legal secretary - married in Hartlepool in September last year.

He said Saturday's re-enactment would be a bit of fun with the odd surprise thrown in for people's entertainment. The pair will be appearing outside St Michael's Church, in Main Street, at noon.

This weekend will see Haworth's historic centre flooded with Second World War memorabilia.

The event is organised by the Haworth Traders Association and attracts thousands of visitors each year, including people from overseas.

Both days will feature people dressed in authentic wartime clothing, vintage military and civilian vehicles, a 1940s-style souvenir newspaper, a marching pipe band and guest appearances by "Winston Churchill" and "The Queen".

There will be a jive and swing dance in Haworth Community Centre tomorrow night with further dances and live bands on Saturday night.

A Royal Air Force memorial flypast is planned for Saturday and local schoolchildren will stage a "wartime evacuation" on Sunday.
