Dealer’s £250 drug stash leads to custody
A teenager who bought a quantity of cocaine to sell on to friends has been locked up for 16 months.
Matthew Ingham, who had no previous convictions, was arrested by police in February after they stopped a car in Halifax Road, near Cross Roads.
Prosecutor Richard Davies told Bradford Crown Court on Monday that the 19-year-old, of Queens Grove, Ingrow, initially denied having drugs on him but after officers found £200 in an envelope the teenager eventually handed over a sock containing nine bags of the Class A drug.
Mr Davies said the cocaine was estimated to be worth about £250 and in total £275 in cash was seized from Ingham.
During a police interview, Ingham said he had bought the cocaine a few weeks before for himself and his friends.
Gerald Hendron, for Ingham, said his client had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity to supplying cocaine, possessing cocaine with intent to supply and possessing criminal property.
Mr Hendron said his client came from a good family and faced the prospect of custody with trepidation, describing it as a heavy blow for the teenager. He urged a suspended sentence to be imposed.
But Judge Roger Scott said those who dealt in drugs for money should expect to face time behind bars.
Ingham was sentenced to 16 months in a young offenders institution and the judge ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the cocaine seized.
