Fed-up residents sick of the sight of wrecked dry-stone walls in their picturesque village have literally taken the problem into their own hands.

Armed with tools of the trade, a band of dedicated residents have started a mission to rebuild historic Yorkshire stone boundaries in Wilsden.

Led by Wilsden parish councillor Tony Caunt, the volunteers started by building up four metres of a dilapidated wall in Birchlands Avenue.

Cllr Caunt said: "It is a serious problem. The walls have deteriorated, purely by neglect, or have been vandalised.

"They are the responsibility of the farmers, but farmers don't have a great amount of money and they don't have the labourers they used to."

The work comes following support from the local community.

The first Wilsden Wall Building Group meeting was held in the village on April 29 and is being backed by the parish council.

The council may look to provide some funding to the group.

Among the 25 residents who expressed an interest in getting involved was 14-year-old schoolgirl Fiona Proctor.

She said: "I am just fed up with the walls looking really untidy.

"It is something I am interested in doing and I would quite like to do something like this when I am older."

Childminder Jean Hayton, 59, also took time out to improve the village. She said: "It keeps you fit and it's great to meet new people."

Anyone interested in getting involved should contact Cllr Caunt on 01535 273709.
