Table-topping Cougars set for York clash

Keighley Cougars go into this Sunday's clash at York on top of National League Two.

Cougars' head coach Barry Eaton knows the league tables might be slightly misleading but he isn't complaining after a tense and high-scoring battle against Rochdale Hornets last Sunday, which Keighley won 36-35.

Eaton said: "We've only gone top because Doncaster weren't playing and they have a game in hand while Barrow have two," he said.

"But we're there and we're going to enjoy it while it lasts regardless."

Although the Cougars didn't play well, they still managed to win.

Eaton said: "We've got a bit more steel about us this season. We were not at our best at the weekend but we managed to win the game.

"We were 11 points ahead with ten minutes left and maybe we thought we had the game in the bag. But all credit to Rochdale, they dug in, scored two more tries and made a game of it.

"We should have closed the game out but we got a result. That was the most important thing."

“We’ll have to be right on top of our game at the weekend because York are certainly a good side. It won’t be long before they’re turning close results into massive wins.”

Winning six out of their first seven league games has been a massive boost to the squad's morale as they prepare themselves for a challenging match at ever-improving York.

Eaton said: "Things are going well. We certainly have a confident bunch of lads at the moment."

But Eaton is not expecting an easy game from York, who have only won two of their seven league matches. The Knights' record is a bit misleading as many of their losses have been by just a few points, which in turn have resulted in the team gaining four bonus points.

Eaton said: "We'll have to be right on top of our game at the weekend because York are certainly a good side. It won't be long before they're turning close results into massive wins."

He said the Knights probably got off to a stuttering start to the season because they have a new coach in place, former Wakefield Wildcats player Paul March, and they have had several new signings.

They include Adam Sullivan, a former National League Two Team of the Year member. He said York are also close to signing Aussie Tom Herbechet, who now plays for Super League club Castleford Tigers.

Cougars will be without influential second rower Neil Lowe this Sunday, who will be resting an on-going foot injury. He will make way for Greg Nicholson, who has been putting in some impressive performance in Cougars' reserves.

Full back George Rayner also has a toe injury but Eaton is hoping he will be fit. If not, Danny Jones will move to full back, allowing Jon Presley to step in at half back.

Dan Potter and his wife are also expecting a baby on Sunday but Eaton is hoping the little one will hold out for another day so his centre can play. The game at York kicks off at 3pm.
