Families make Brontë Vintage Gathering a record breaker

Crowds flocked to Brontë Vintage Gathering at the weekend as the tenth event proved to be its most successful.

The sizzling conditions brought huge numbers to the event on Saturday and Sunday as it raised £21,000 for charity, its best ever total.

There was the usual range of vintage vehicles and a host of other entertainment, including a fairground.

Among new attractions this year were the "Zero Gravity" freestyle trials team, a chainsaw sculptor and a scrapheap challenge event, in which visitors were invited to bring along a homemade device to compete in an orange-throwing competition.

The winners were Stephen and Thomas Metcalfe, from Cumbria, who propelled the fruit more than 80 metres with a contraption made from a drainpipe, a gas hob lighter and canister of hairspray.

On Saturday evening there was a dance with a licensed bar and live entertainment in the beer tent from Rakish Paddy.

Proceeds from the event - held at Haworth Road, in Cullingworth - go to Manorlands, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care hospice.

Tom Jowett, chairman of the Brontë Vintage Gathering committee, was delighted with the event's success.

He said: "After a few years blighted by poor weather we were pleased that the huge crowds returned to enjoy our event and help us raise a large amount for such a worthy cause in the process."

Andrew Wood, a fundraiser at Manorlands, said: "The weather was excellent and a lot of people came through the gates. We were very pleased with how things went."
