Park Lane College Keighley is celebrating the achievements of past and present students as part of a national event.

It will take part in VQ Day next Wednesday by inviting the public to go along and learn about its vocational courses.

It also urges learners past and present to sign up to a "vocational qualifications roll call" at vqday.org.

Maxine Room, the principal, said she was delighted to back the national celebration of vocational success.

She said: "I am so pleased that the achievement of learners studying vocational qualifications is finally being recognised.

"Colleges are about giving individuals a chance to better themselves and giving students a variety of methods to learn.

"Vocational progression routes are just as valid and valuable as traditional, academic means of study."

Keighley MP Ann Cryer said the launch of VQ Day was a huge step forward for the world of vocational learning.

She said: "Vocational qualifications can set people up for life and it is high time the hard work of colleges, students and employers was recognised nationally."

Plans for the day are being led by education foundation Edge and are supported by the wider education community, including exam boards, employers' organisations, colleges and learning providers.

A roll call of vocational success has been established at vqday.org for past and present vocational learners to log on and add their name to the list.

Visitors to the website can also vote for their Celebrity VQ Hero 2008. The short-list of five celebrities, all of whom have made their name after gaining a vocational qualification, will be announced shortly.
