An animation of the Jack and the Beanstalk story put together by primary school pupils was runner-up in a regional contest.

A group of about 20 year three and four pupils from Riddlesden St Mary's Primary School spent at least five months producing the three-minute-long production.

This made it through to the finals in the animation category of the Bradford schools national film and television competition.

The production came second, despite having only been entered into the competition "on a whim".

Riddlesden Primary's technician, Kevin Hogg, said: "We hadn't initially set out to take part in the contest so we're really pleased with how well we've done.

"The kids loved working on it. We used stop motion' techniques, which involved taking frame by frame photographs and moving models.

"We then did some computer editing and added sound effects."

St Mary's deputy head, Keith Davies, said the beanstalk story was chosen because it tied in with the school's emphasis on ecological issues.

"The project has also been great for the children's confidence and self-esteem," he added.
