Would-be newlyweds were as pleased as punch when a company stepped in to stop their big days turning to disaster.

Two civil ceremonies and receptions booked to take place at Steeton Hall Hotel at the weekend and one next month were threatened when operator Cains Beer Company went into administration.

But Punch Taverns, which leased the hotel to Cains, intervened to ensure the nuptials could go ahead.

Punch's operations manager, Karen Canning, said: "The outlet is a hotel - not a pub - so we didn't have our usual bank of talent to draw on. But after trying about a dozen different operators, Publicana - which runs a number of other Punch sites - agreed to take on Steeton Hall for us and ensure the weddings still took place."

She added: "These couples had paid in full for a civil ceremony and wedding reception. There is no way they would have been able to find an alternative venue in time and would have lost the full cost of the wedding. Punch will be footing the bill in full.

"A wedding is such a huge event in a person's life so I'm delighted that we were able to help."

Punch Taverns has more than 8,400 leased, tenanted and managed outlets across the UK.
