Keighley’s new champion for the over-50s aims to protect groups that provide a lifeline for older people.

Julie Lintern believes that local groups could have a more secure future if they provide support for each other.

Julie is the new older people’s development manager at Keighley and Ilkley Voluntary and Community Action.

She carried out a similar role at Bradford Older People’s Alliance.

She said: “In my previous role I was becoming increasingly aware of older people’s groups disbanding due to lack of funding, volunteers and participants.

“These groups are a lifeline to many and I hope to create mutually supportive networks in each postcode area.”

Julie said networking could allow groups to organise joint activities, apply for joint funding and attract members to each other’s activities.

By working together, groups in one area could find out whether they were addressing the needs of people in their community.

Julie said: “Friendship networks can develop from a regular coffee morning.

“If someone who is usually there has failed to turn up, people are alerted.”

Julie would like to hear from groups that are already in local networks, and those who could benefit from support. Call her on (01535) 665258 or e-mail julie@kivca.org.uk.
