Support for a two-state solution in the Middle East has been underlined by Keighley MP Kris Hopkins.
He was speaking after Foreign Secretary William Hague told the House of Commons the UK was likely to abstain in a United Nations vote on upgraded diplomatic status for Palestinians.
This was the UK’s eventual course of action, and despite strong opposition from the United States and Israel, the UN motion was carried.
The move upgrades the Palestinian Authority’s observer status at the UN to ‘non-member state’.
Mr Hague had told fellow MPs Britain was ready to back calls for recognition of a Palestinian state if it gave a commitment to an immediate and unconditional return to the negotiating table with Israel.
Mr Hopkins said: “Will this country continue to pursue a two-state solution with every effort, if for no other reason than that we have an historical and moral responsibility to assist in ending that conflict?”
“We will do that,” Mr Hague replied.
