A man claiming to be selling goods for charity stole money from an elderly woman in Keighley.

The theft took place at a home in Marlborough Street on Monday afternoon.

A spokesman for Airedale and North Bradford Police said: “We were called at around 4.30pm to reports of a burglary. A man claiming to be selling items for charity attended the property of an 82-year-old woman and took a significant amount of cash from her purse.

“He is described as white, of large build and was carrying a black holdall.

“Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact the non-emergency number 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.”

Detective Sergeant Patrick Noon, of Airedale and North Bradford CID, said: “Unfortunately this is a technique which we often see used. Thieves will use all manner of excuses to gain access to people’s homes and their property. People should not open the door to anyone they are not expecting to call.”

He said householders expecting a visit should check the person’s identification.
