MP Kris Hopkins welcomes withdrawal from Afghanistan

Confirmation that 3,800 British troops are to be withdrawn from Afghanistan next year has been welcomed by Keighley’s MP.

News that the overall number of UK troops in Afghanistan will fall to around 5,200 by the end of 2013 was described as “incredibly positive” by Kris Hopkins.

He added: “Each and every one of our brave servicemen and women are heroes to us all.

“They have put their lives and limbs on the line to protect us and, for that, we will be forever in their debt.”

Mr Hopkins, who is Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Minister of State for the Armed Forces, said challenges remain for troops assigned to stay in a combat role in Afghanistan between now and 2014.

But he said he expected they would respond to these demands with valour and professionalism.
