A former Keighley Tory MP has died aged 87.

Sir Marcus Worsley, the Duchess of Kent’s brother, represented the town in Parliament between 1959 and 1964.

Educated at Eton College, he served with the Green Howards in India, later studying at New College in Oxford before working for the BBC.

Following his stint as Keighley MP, he won a seat in Chelsea where he served for eight years.

On the death of his father, Sir William, in 1973, he went to live at the family home – Hovingham Hall, near York.

He was involved in many organisations, including the National Trust, of which he was latterly deputy chairman.

Sir Marcus was Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire between 1987 and 1999, was a member of the General Synod for many years and was a major supporter of numerous music festivals.

A memorial service will be held in York Minster at 2pm on January 31.
