Green Dragon appearance ahead of overhaul

The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway No 957 engine, which appeared in The Railway Children as The Green Dragon
A Victorian steam locomotive that starred in the classic 1970 movie version of The Railway Children is to undergo renovation.
The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway No 957 engine famously appeared in the film, shot on the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway (K&WVR), as The Green Dragon.
It will have its final outing on the K&WVR on January 20 before its overhaul, which is likely to be carried out at Haworth during an estimated two-year programme.
A K&WVR spokesman said the work was routinely done at ten-yearly intervals.
“It is a bit like a car having an MOT test but a lot more complicated,” he added.
“It will involve inspection and overhaul, as necessary, of the firebox, boiler and running gear, and any other ancillary work needed.”
The 1887-built loco will be joined on January 20 by Lancashire & Yorkshire No 1300, a similar engine currently on loan to the railway.
And another locomotive – the British Railways Ivatt tank no 41241 – will also be making a farewell pre-overhaul appearance.
