'Help the elderly' plea as temperatures plummet
8:51am Friday 11th January 2013 in News
A pensioners’ group is urging people to help their elderly neighbours prepare for the cold spell expected this weekend.
The Keighley and Bradford Pensioners’ Association has offered advice on how to stay healthy when the temperature drops to freezing levels.
Cold weather can be particularly dangerous for the elderly, as it raises the risk of heart attacks and strokes, and can cause problems for people with asthma and other breathing difficulties.
The Met Office is predicting that temperatures will fall below 2 degrees this weekend, which could bring icy conditions and/or heavy snow.
Pensioners are advised to keep their bedroom windows closed at night, wrap up well when they go outside, keep their living room at 70F (21C) and keep their bedroom at 65F (18C).
A statement from the group said: “If there is anyone you know who might be at risk, why not visit or call them to make sure they alright and know what to do.”
