A Keighley councillor arrested on suspicion of violent disorder last summer has been told that police will take no further action against him.

Following his arrest, Abid Hussain, 53, who represents Keighley Central on Bradford Council, was suspended from the Labour Party but remained a councillor. Since the announcement that police had dropped the case he has been welcomed back to the party.

He said today: “I am delighted to have been welcomed back.

“I co-operated fully with West Yorkshire Police because I had nothing to hide and I am very thankful to all my Labour group colleagues who have supported me through the process.

“I’m hugely proud to be a councillor for Keighley Central, standing up for people here and providing a strong voice for them on Bradford Council, and I will continue working hard for Keighley.”

Coun Hussain was detained on suspicion of violent disorder on August 8 along with three other Keighley men - aged 18, 19 and 34.

Two other men, aged 27 and 30, were held over the same incident on suspicion of arson relating to two car fires on October 20 - one on Devonshire Street and another in Malsis Road.

The men were all bailed, but charges have never been brought, and police have confirmed none of the six will face any further action for the alleged brawl.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “Following consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, we have made the decision not to take any further action against the six men arrested in connection with the incident in Keighley in August.”

Labour’s chief whip on Bradford Council confirmed Coun Hussain had been allowed back into the party, adding: “It appears it was all a mistake, and the case has been dropped. We welcomed this news and welcomed Coun Hussain back into the party.”
