Keighley firefighters are sporting a new look.

They and colleagues across West Yorkshire have been issued with replacement kit, above, made from material known as PBI Gold.

“PBI Gold is used by 80 per cent of fire brigades in the UK, which goes to show how reliable it is,” said the county’s Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Craig McIntosh.

“The modern, ergonomically-designed kit provides improved protection to firefighters during incidents, as well as enhanced wearer comfort that reduces the effects of heat stress.”

He added the new gear had been introduced due to the diminishing quality of the previous navy blue kit, and was chosen following extensive testing of several garments.

Roger Startin, of Bristol, the company that produces the clothing, said: “This is a major success for us and comes at the end of a very thorough assessment process.”
