Staff at a Keighley school will embark on an exercise bike challenge in aid of a trainee PE teacher who was paralysed after a holiday in Greece.

Callum Hall, 20, was poisoned last year after he stepped on a sea urchin. The venom created an abscess on his spine, which burst and left him paralysed.

Staff and pupils at Holy Family Catholic School are now working together to try and raise money for Callum to aid his recovery and provide specialist equipment to help him walk again. Callum said he was hoping to compete in the 2016 Paralympics.

Jess Moran, head of year seven at Holy Family, said Callum lives in Yeadon but is known to staff at the Keighley school, who are part of the same church parish as Callum’s family.

She added Holy Family headteacher Lawrence Bentley and deputy head Martin Hings had both taught Callum’s siblings.

A Holy Family spokesman said: “Callum is in touch with the school and is grateful for any funds raised. If people would like to know more about his story, or want to sponsor him, they can visit his website at callumhalltrust.com or contact Jess Moran at Holy Family.”

One of the fundraising activities to be undertaken by Mr Bentley and 17 other staff members will be a continuous exercise bike ride throughout the school day. This will start in assembly at 9am on March 15. Each member of staff will ride for 15 to 30 minutes on an exercise bike on the school stage, wearing T-shirts donated by MC Sports in Skipton.

Staff will collect sponsorship and will be supported by the students, especially at lunchtime when Mr Bentley and other senior managers will take to the bicycle stage.
