An Oakworth man who temporarily lost the sight in one eye has taken up painting again following surgery.

Graham Foster is currently exhibiting his pictures of Yorkshire landscapes at Haworth Tourist Information Centre.

A lifelong amateur artist, he suffered a detached retina in 2009 but his sight was restored following surgery at Bradford Royal Infirmary.

He said: “They did miracles – now I can read again and I can paint for an hour at a time.”

Graham, of Highfield Lane, focuses on the man-made aspects of landscapes, such as walls, farms and fences.

He particularly likes to paint dry stone walls, reflecting the many years he spent building them across the north.

He said: “They’re not strictly speaking photographic images, they’re more impressions of the Bronte landscapes.

“We think it’s wonderful natural landscape but it’s not – the fields are there for cultivation, the moors are there because people cut down trees.”

Graham grew up on a farm in Gilstead before attending Bradford Art College and the Royal College of Art.

He spent most of his working life in the printing trade, but following voluntary redundancy in the 1980s, he took up dry stone walling.

The exhibition at the tourist centre in Main Street, Haworth, runs until next April 6.
