The courage and determination of a paralysed teenager will spur competitors on during a charity sporting event next month.

Nathan Cubitt was left paralysed from the chest down at the age of 16 after suffering a broken neck when a scrum collapsed while playing for Keighley Crusaders against the Bradford & Bingley Bees on November 6, 2011.

The Silsden youngster underwent spinal surgery at Leeds General Infirmary after the accident, before being transferred to Pinderfields Hospital in Wakefield.

Fundraising for his care has been ongoing since that fateful day, with the second Nathan Cubitt Trust Tag Rugby event planned for May 26 at Keighley Rugby Club.

World Cup winner Jason Robinson is once again supporting the event, together with fellow dual-code international Henry Paul.

It is hoped enough funds will be raised to provide the now 17-year-old Nathan with a special chair that means he doesn’t have to sit in a wheelchair all day.

Alongside the rugby, there will be a display by mountain bikers Chris Akrigg and Chris Doney, who have appeared on Top Gear Live. Chris Akrigg also featured on the BBC Helicopter Heroes programme when he took a tumble off Cowling Pinnacle.

Other attractions include a hog roast, bouncy castle, bungee run, face-painting, cake and sweet stalls.

Event manager Mark Dunstan said: “We still have space for teams to enter the event. so please e-mail nathantagrugby@gmail.com, which can also be used to donate a raffle prize.

“We are also looking for a street dance crew to put on a display during the lunchtime break.”
