An inquest has been opened into the death of a grandmother killed after she paid a cab outside her home.

Bradford Coroners Court opened and adjourned proceedings on Friday, meaning Mary Byrne’s family can now go ahead with their mother’s funeral.

After the hearing, her daughter, Sam Rees, who lives near Keighley, said the funeral – at St Michael’s and All Angels Church in Halifax Road, Shelf, at 11.30am on Monday – would be open to everyone.

“Anybody who knew her from school or anywhere is welcome to come – anyone who would like to pay their respects,” she said.

“We’re just hoping we can celebrate everything about my mum. We’ve got to remember the good things and not just what happened.

“We’d like to thank everybody for their support and the police, who have been doing so much.

“We can now lay my mum to rest, but this next year is going to be a long year. The funeral is just the first step of what we’ve got to go through.”

Mother-of-four Mrs Byrne, 51, a cook at a care home, was just yards from her front door when the private hire car she had just paid in Mandale Road, Horton Bank Top, Bradford, on April 20, was involved in a two-car collision that left her fatally injured.

She had spent the afternoon celebrating a friend’s birthday.

In a bitter irony, the accident happened near the gates of a primary school where a poster by her granddaughter, Grace, seven, pleaded for drivers to be considerate.

At Monday’s funeral service – which will followed by burial at North Bierley Cemetery – there will be a collection for Martin House Hospice and Brake, the road safety charity, and family flowers only.

Police arrested a 17-year-old youth and two men aged 19 and 21 following the incident, and they were released on bail as the investigation continues.

A police spokesman said: “This remains an extremely complex inquiry, and we would like to hear from further witnesses who may have not come forward.”
