A derelict school site in Keighley and its 8,228 square metre playing fields will soon be sold off by Bradford Council.

The former Braithwaite Special School site has been empty since April 2010 when it relocated to purpose-built premises. The site has planning permission for a 25 houses, parking and storage for the neighbouring Clock-house Centre, but is still owned by Bradford Council.

The local authority has now launched a public consultation regarding plans to dispose of the site, marketing it to potential housing developers and re-investing the money into other council facilities.

But as the disposal of assets involves playing fields, the decision will have to be made by Secretary of State for Education Michael Gove.

Coun Ralph Berry, in charge of education with Bradford Council, said: “This is the completion of a plan to re-invest in the resources we need in the face of cuts. The money we get from the sale will help protect what we have.”
