A national charity representing people of Italian descent will stage its annual convention in Keighley for the first time.

ACLI, the Christian Association of Italian Workers, will stage the event at University Academy Keighley (UAK) on June 9 from 10.30am to 5.30pm.

The group has about 5,000 members in the UK, including 150 members of its Keighley branch, which was set up about 25 years ago.

Keighley ACLI president, Giovanni d’Angelo, said the convention normally takes place in London, but he had successfully asked for it to be brought to Keighley this year.

The invitation-only occasion will include a mass, conference, refreshments and a dinner dance. It will attract ACLI members from across the UK, including a number of prominent guests who are active in the overseas Italian community.

Mr d’Angelo said ACLI’s activities included making sure younger people of Italian origin could remain in touch with their cultural heritage.

He added the Keighley branch was in good shape, and usually arranges about six or seven parties a year.

He said he was grateful to UAK for providing such an excellent venue for the convention.
