Once again we see Bradford Council imposing its will on Keighley – Anger at shock housing report (Keighley News, May 23).

The newly released figures for proposed new homes in Keighley district is 5,233. Of these, approximately 2,700 are proposed on 54 greenfield sites in the area (plus others on what it terms as ‘mixture’). This is a real threat to our beautiful green fields that surround Keighley and help to give it its unique identity (as David Cameron remarked on his recent visit).

It becomes very worrying when you study the proposed sites. For instance, if you actually get the map to download on the councils site (I tried on three occasions today, waiting for 20 minutes each time – nothing happened, perhaps Bradford Council’s way of making sure people don’t know just what’s going on), you will see areas of our green fields that will disappear under housing. To give several examples, the land on the left-hand side of the road up to the tarn will be built on with 420 homes developed on the old quarry site; land either side of the North Beck will see nearly 200 homes constructed, and two fields adjacent to the Worth Valley Railway – between Damens and Oakworth – would see 420 homes constructed (very nice for all our visitors on the trains; the way things are going you will spend 50 per cent of the time on the train travelling through a housing estate!).

I would urge anyone with the interests of Keighley at heart to study this proposed plan and oppose it before it’s too late.

Bradford Council doesn’t want us to see it. If it did, it would be more readily accessible to all. As it says in today’s editorial in the Keighley News, doing nothing is not an option.
